Beleg is a Sindarin Elf of Doriath and chief of its march-wardens, the captains who keep the borders of King Thingol's forest realm. He is called Cúthalion, Strongbow, for his skill as an archer; his bow is named Belthronding. The Silmarillion sets him beside Mablung as one of the two great captains of the Sindar. When Orcs come into the forest of Brethil and Halmir, chieftain of the Haladin, sends to Thingol for help, it is Beleg who leads a company of Sindar north, and the two peoples together ambush the Orc-legion in the deep woods; for many years afterwards no Orc dares cross the river Teiglin.
