Battle of the Green Fields
The Battle of the Green Fields in 2747 is the one time the Shire was invaded, when Orcs out of Mount Gram came into the Northfarthing and hobbits under Bandobras Took met them in the field.
The Shire keeps no army and has been invaded once. In the year 2747 of the Third Age a band of Orcs out of Mount Gram came down into the Northfarthing, at a time when several such bands were loose in Eriador and the Rangers were stretched thin across it. What met them was a body of hobbits under Bandobras Took, and what settled the matter was a charge on horseback and a wooden club. The Shire calls it the Battle of the Green Fields, after the district where it happened, and tells it chiefly for the sake of one blow struck at the end, which hobbit tradition holds to be the origin of a game.
