Battle of Five Armies

Fought in the valley below the Lonely Mountain, the Battle of Five Armies set the Goblins and Wargs of the Misty Mountains and the Grey Mountains against three hosts that had come to Erebor for quite different reasons: the Dwarves of the Iron Hills under Dain Ironfoot, the Elves of the Woodland Realm under Thranduil, and the Men of Lake-town under Bard. Those three were quarrelling over the treasure heaped inside the Mountain and stood on the point of fighting one another when Gandalf brought word that a far greater army was marching down from the north. Their commanders drew up on the two spurs above the valley and across its mouth, hoping to draw the goblin host into the narrow ground between them.
