Barrow-blades
The barrow-blades are four leaf shaped daggers taken from a mound on the Barrow-downs and carried away by the hobbits at the start of their journey.
Four long daggers taken out of a mound on the Barrow-downs pass to Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin at the beginning of their road east. The blades are leaf shaped and damasked with serpent forms in red and gold, set with fiery stones, and the metal is light and strong and unfamiliar to any hobbit eye. To a Man they would be knives. To a hobbit they are swords, and better swords than anything the Shire has to offer. They were laid in that mound with treasure a very long time before, by hands that are no longer named, and the workmanship in them is nothing ordinary. Four hobbits who have never carried a weapon in earnest walk out of the downs with one apiece.
