Barad-dûr
Barad-dûr is the Dark Tower of Sauron in Mordor in The Lord of the Rings, the mightiest fortress of the Dark Lord, first raised in an earlier age and rebuilt as his power rises again in the east.
Among the evil tidings Gandalf lays before Frodo is a piece of architecture: the Dark Tower is rebuilt. Barad-dûr is the fortress of Sauron in Mordor, his seat in the age of his first great power and again. Raised upon a spur of rock in the heart of his land, it is the greatest stronghold in Middle-earth, a mountain of walls, courts, and battlements of iron beneath which his servants gather and from which his will runs out across the East. To the free peoples it is less a building than a presence, a name spoken as reluctantly as that of its master. Maps set it deep inside Mordor, near the Fire-mountain; rumor and dread supply everything else, for of the free peoples none in living memory has looked upon its gates.
