Bag End

A round green door with a shiny brass knob in the exact middle opens. Behind it runs Bag End, the hobbit-hole of Bilbo Baggins under the Hill at Hobbiton: a tunnel-hall paneled and carpeted, lined with doors to bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries, wardrobes, and kitchens, its deep-set round windows looking over the garden to the meadows beyond. Built by Bilbo's father Bungo for his mother Belladonna Took, it is as comfortable a dwelling as the Shire can show. The old hole belongs to the next generation: Bilbo's heir Frodo lives there, the Gaffer keeps the garden with his son Sam, and the great birthday party is planned in its parlors. Respectable, envied, and much visited, Bag End is the still center.
