The Heart of the Mountain, a great white gem dug from beneath Erebor in the days of Thrain I and shaped by the Dwarves into the chief heirloom of the Kings under the Mountain.
A great white gem found beneath the roots of Erebor by Dwarves working under Thrain I, not long after the Kingdom under the Mountain was founded in the year 1999 of the Third Age. They judged it the fairest thing in the world and called it the Heart of the Mountain. Cut and shaped, it was set in the Great Hall of Thrain and handed down as the heirloom of the Kings under the Mountain, carried to the Grey Mountains by Thorin I and brought home again by Thror. It shines with a light of its own, a small globe of pale radiance in the dark, and any light that falls upon it comes back as ten thousand white sparks shot with the colours of the rainbow.
