Angband
Angband is the fortress of Morgoth in The Silmarillion, a mighty underground stronghold beneath the mountains of the North of Middle-earth in the Elder Days, from which the first Dark Lord makes his wars.
The wars of The Silmarillion have a single dark point of origin in the North. Angband, the Iron Prison, is the fortress of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord: an underground stronghold of pits, forges, and dungeons delved beneath the mountains at the north of Middle-earth, with the triple peaks of Thangorodrim reared in smoke above its gates. From it he directs his armies, his captains, and his designs upon the lands and peoples south of him. In the geography of the Elder Days, Angband defines the North the way the Sea defines the West: a fixed menace whose watchfires close the horizon. The realms of the Elves in Beleriand are built, guarded, and ordered with Angband always in mind, and the marches, leaguers, and songs of the age circle around its iron gates.
