Demons are a tribe native to Hell who sustain themselves on the emotions of the living, and their higher ranks have shed flesh and gender entirely, projecting partial bodies into the mortal world while the remainder stays safely below. Wicked deeds earn a demon extra lives, letting it sacrifice part of its soul to return from destruction. What the race treats as sacred is the contract: a demon would sooner die than break an agreed bargain, and demons respect the contracts of other demons, which makes them popular, if pricey, subjects of summoning. For all that power, they have firm weaknesses in holy water, silver, priestly magic, and the sanctified air of churches, and their society below runs on the survival of the fittest.
