The reaping that takes Velvereen out of District 1 falls on the fourth of July. She had lived there since the failed rebellion of the Dark Days and possibly before it, and she and the other tributes for the 10th Hunger Games are loaded into dirty cattle cars for the trip to the Capitol, then moved to a truck that tips them all out into the monkey house at the zoo. Palmyra Monty, a student at the Academy, is the mentor assigned to her.
