A tribute is one of the twenty four children the districts send to the Hunger Games, a boy and a girl from each of the twelve, drawn at a public reaping. Eligibility runs from twelve to eighteen. A twelve year old's name goes into the ball once and an eighteen year old's at least seven times, and a child can add entries deliberately by taking tesserae: one extra slip buys a year of grain and oil for one person, every year, and the entries pile up. Once chosen, a tribute is put on a train to the Capitol and handed to a mentor and a stylist for a week of parades, training, and interviews before the arena.
