Peeta Mellark is the baker's son from District 12 whose name is drawn as the boy tribute at the reaping, broad-shouldered and strong from years of hauling bread trays.
Peeta has wavy ashy blond hair, blue eyes and a stocky build, and he sits in Katniss's year at school. Years before the reaping, when her family is starving in a freezing rain, he tosses her two scorched loaves behind his family's shop, a fresh welt on his cheek from his mother. On the way to the Capitol he lets his tears show openly.
