Panem

Panem is the nation built on the drowned and reshaped remains of North America after ecological disaster and war ended the world before it. It is governed from the Capitol, a city in the Rocky Mountains, and divided into outlying districts that supply it: twelve, thirteen before the Dark Days. Each district produces one thing, travel and communication between districts are banned, and Peacekeepers enforce Capitol law everywhere. Seventy-four years before, the districts rose against the Capitol and lost, and the Treaty of Treason that followed created the Hunger Games. The name comes from the Latin phrase panem et circenses, bread and circuses, the idea that a population given food and spectacle will surrender everything else.
