The shopkeeping families of District 12's town square, set apart from the Seam and generally better off.
District 12 splits into two halves. The Seam is the miners' end of the district; the town square belongs to the merchant families who own its shops and live in the rooms above them, among them the bakery, the butcher, the grocery, the apothecary, the shoe shop, and the sweet shop. Merchant children are the better fed of the district, and because their families do not need to trade extra reaping entries for grain and oil, their names go into the ball fewer times. The line between town and Seam shows in appearances, with merchants tending toward blond hair and blue eyes and Seam families toward dark hair and gray. Both halves sit in the same school and learn the same coal trade.
