Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen narrates The Hunger Games and lives in the Seam, the poorest quarter of District 12. She keeps her mother and her younger sister Primrose fed by slipping under the district fence to hunt with a bow in woods where nobody is supposed to go, then trading what she brings back. She is small and thin, underfed like most of the Seam but strong for her size from years of hunting, with long black hair worn in a braid, olive skin, and gray eyes. She is stubborn, determined, and guarded, inclined to act first and ask questions afterward, and she has a hard instinct to protect anyone weaker than she is. When her sister's name is drawn at the reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place.
