Surviving the Hunger Games starts well before the arena. Tributes reach the Capitol with a week of appearances ahead of them, and how they handle the chariot parade, the training gym, and the interview decides who is willing to sponsor them. In the arena the choices narrow to a few: fight for the supplies stacked at the Cornucopia or run from them, travel alone or take an ally, hunt the others or stay hidden. Tributes from the wealthier districts train for the Games from childhood and tend to band together at the start. The rest work with what the arena grows, what they can salvage, and whatever a mentor can afford to send in.
