Haymitch Abernathy is District 12's mentor for its Hunger Games tributes and one of its two past victors, a paunchy man of middle age who turns up drunk to the reaping.
Haymitch Abernathy staggers onto the stage at the reaping, hollering something nobody can make out, and tries to hug Effie Trinket, who only just fends him off. With the cameras rolling, the whole district becomes the laughingstock of Panem.
Once the girl tribute has been chosen, he lurches back across the stage, throws an arm around the girl who has just volunteered and shouts at a camera, his breath reeking of liquor, before he falls off the edge and knocks himself out. He is stronger than he looks. On the train to the Capitol he misses supper, turns up slurring, and is sick all over the carpet, while Effie Trinket insists that he is the lifeline of the pair he travels with, the one who lines up sponsors and handles any gifts.
