Gale Hawthorne is Katniss's hunting partner in the woods outside District 12, the one person she can be herself around.
Gale calls Katniss Catnip, a name born when she first whispered her real one to him. On reaping morning he brings real bakery bread pierced by one of his arrows, bought with a squirrel, and floats the idea that the two of them could run off and live in the woods. He has two small brothers and a little sister, and so many tesserae that his name sits in the reaping ball dozens of times. When Prim is reaped, he lifts her off Katniss and carries her away.
