Gale Hawthorne

Gale Hawthorne is Katniss Everdeen's hunting partner and closest friend in The Hunger Games, a boy from District 12 who feeds his family the same way she does, by slipping past the fence into the woods and poaching what the Capitol says belongs to nobody. He signs up for tesserae to add grain and oil to his family's ration and sells what he does not need. He is quick to laugh when he is with Katniss and quick to anger otherwise, and he says out loud what most people in District 12 keep behind their teeth: that the Capitol's rule is unjust and that rebellion is preferable to obedience. He thinks in absolutes, sees little gray between right and wrong, and holds to what he believes with the same intensity Katniss keeps under tighter control.
