Cornucopia bloodbath

At the start of every Hunger Games the tributes rise into the arena on metal plates set out in a ring, with the Cornucopia and its supplies at the center. A gong releases them. Whoever runs for the horn can come away with weapons, food, water, and packed supplies; whoever runs the other way stays clear of the fighting but starts with nothing. Those first minutes are the deadliest stretch of most Games, which is what the Gamemakers intend, since the field narrows quickly and the audience gets its spectacle early. Whatever is left of the pile usually ends up guarded by the tributes who trained for this.
