District 12's tributes for this year's Games are Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers at the reaping, and Peeta Mellark.
Every year the Capitol requires each of Panem's twelve districts to send two children into an arena, and the 74th Hunger Games follow that pattern. At the reaping in District 12, Katniss Everdeen steps forward in place of her younger sister, and Peeta Mellark is drawn as the male tribute. The two travel to the Capitol, where a stylist named Cinna dresses them for the chariot parade, they spend several days in the training gym alongside the other tributes, they are scored in a private session with the Gamemakers, and Caesar Flickerman interviews them on live television. Seneca Crane is the Head Gamemaker responsible for the arena, and Haymitch Abernathy, District 12's mentor, works the sponsors.
