Vanishing Spell

Evanesco, the Vanishing Spell, is a piece of Transfiguration that makes a thing cease to be, and it works on the living as readily as on objects. Professor McGonagall describes what happens to whatever is vanished as going "into non-being, which is to say, everything". It is one of the hardest spells examined at Ordinary Wizarding Level, and Hogwarts fifth-years meet it in Transfiguration, starting on snails and working up. It turns up in Beedle the Bard as well: in The Wizard and the Hopping Pot a son tries to vanish the pot and finds the spell has no effect on it at all, and in Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump the witch vanishes a hat.
