Tom Riddle is a Hogwarts student of fifty years ago and a Head Boy, whose name sits on a school trophy for special service and on a shabby black diary that writes back.
Harry and Ron find the diary in Moaning Myrtle's flooded bathroom, its leaves empty, and Ron knows the name from a shield Filch made him polish in detention. When Harry writes in it, his ink sinks away and Riddle's own words rise to answer. Riddle writes that in his fifth year he caught whoever opened the Chamber of Secrets, and the memory he shows Harry leaves Harry convinced the culprit is Hagrid.
