A small, thin, plain black diary, about fifty years old and blank from cover to cover, with the name T. M. Riddle on the back and the imprint of Winstanley's Bookstore and Stationers of Vauxhall Road, London, a Muggle shop where it was bought some time before or during 1943. Ink written on its pages sinks away and vanishes as though the paper had absorbed it, and then an answer surfaces in a hand that is not the writer's. The diary can also draw a reader out of the room entirely and into a scene from the past, much the way a Pensieve does.
