The Sword of Gryffindor is a goblin made sword a thousand years old, forged for Godric Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts, and it appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Ragnuk the First, finest of the goblin silversmiths and therefore king among them, made it to Gryffindor's specifications. Ragnuk then coveted the finished blade, put about that Gryffindor had stolen it from him, and sent his people to take it back. Gryffindor beat them off with his wand without killing any of them and sent them home bewitched, carrying the warning that he had only to draw the sword against them all if the king tried to steal from him again. A version of the story survives among goblins in which the theft was real, reflecting a goblin understanding that goblin made objects belong by right to their makers rather than to the wizards who buy them.
