Spattergroit is a wizarding disease caused by an infectious fungus, and it is contagious enough that people keep well clear of anyone who has it; parents pull an affected child out of school until it passes. The skin breaks out in purple pustules, which can leave scars behind, particularly on the face, and once the infection reaches the uvula the sufferer cannot speak at all. It can keep a person bed-ridden for months. One of the portraits of medieval Healers at St Mungo's still recommends a toad's liver bound tight about the throat.
