Sorting Ceremony
Each September at Hogwarts, first-years are called up in the Great Hall to put on the Sorting Hat, which places them in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
The Sorting Ceremony opens every school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone follows one in its early chapters. It is held in the Great Hall after students arrive on the Hogwarts Express, before the start-of-term feast, and it assigns each first-year to one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. The Sorting Hat does the choosing. The hat sits on a stool at the head of the hall and opens with a song of its own composition about the founders and the qualities each house looks for, different every year. First-years are called up in alphabetical order to put it on, and a quiet back-and-forth can pass between hat and wearer.
