Salazar Slytherin's locket is heavy gold, with an ornate serpentine S set into the front in glittering green stones, and it opens only for someone who speaks to it in Parseltongue. It passed down his line as a family heirloom and came in time to the Gaunts, an impoverished pure-blood family who treasured it as proof of their ancestry. When Marvolo Gaunt and his son Morfin were sent to Azkaban, Marvolo's daughter Merope took the locket and sold it to Caractacus Burke of Borgin and Burkes for ten Galleons, a fraction of what it was worth. Burke sold it on to Hepzibah Smith, a wealthy witch with a taste for rare and valuable things, who kept it in her collection and liked to show it to visitors.
