Shield Charm
A charm, incantation Protego, that raises an invisible shield around the caster to reflect spells and block physical objects.
The Shield Charm, cast with the incantation Protego, throws an invisible barrier around the caster that turns spells back and blocks physical objects. Harry Potter first learns it while preparing for the third task of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger firing spells at him for practice. It belongs to the Defence Against the Dark Arts course and is taught formally to sixth years, and several variations of it exist. Its best known use dates to 1484, when the witch Hannah Cockleford cast one between the tyrannical Earl of Paunchley and a small injured boy the Earl had forced into a jousting match. The shield knocked the Earl backwards so hard that his own horse landed on him.
