Severus Snape is the Hogwarts Potions master and Head of Slytherin House, a sallow, hook-nosed teacher with cold black eyes who, Harry is sure, hates him from their first lesson.
At the start-of-term feast he sits at the staff table talking with Professor Quirrell, and Percy says he knows a great deal about the Dark Arts and is said to want Quirrell's job. His classes meet in a chilly dungeon lined with jars of pickled animals, where he keeps the room silent while barely raising his voice and greets Harry by name as the new celebrity.
