In The Tale of the Three Brothers, Death gives the second brother a stone from the riverbank with the power to recall the dead, though those it brings back are never fully alive again.
Beedle the Bard's story The Tale of the Three Brothers describes three brothers who cheat a river that should have drowned them and are met on the far bank by Death, who offers each of them a gift. The second brother, wanting to humble Death further still, asks for the power to recall others from the grave, and Death picks up a stone from the riverbank and hands it to him. Turned three times in the hand, the stone is said to bring back the dead; those who return are never fully alive again, and the tale holds that they have no wish to have come back at all. It is the second of the three objects the story describes, which wizarding readers came to call the Deathly Hallows.
