Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is first seen fast asleep in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, a shabby figure in the corner of a Hogwarts Express compartment with a battered case that names him as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. He looks as though one good meal and a new set of robes are overdue, but his first lesson upends the class's expectations: he marches the students into a practical exercise against a boggart, a shape-shifting creature that takes the form of whatever its viewer fears most, and has them laughing at their own fears by the end of the hour. Courteous, patient, and quietly perceptive, Lupin soon earns a reputation among students as the best Defence teacher Hogwarts has given them.
