Quaffle

The Quaffle is the ball the Chasers play with in Quidditch, the wizarding sport laid out in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is a scarlet leather ball twelve inches across, about the size of a football, and the only one of the three kinds of Quidditch ball that does not move under its own power. The three Chasers on a side carry and pass it towards the opposing goal hoops and score ten points each time it goes through a ring. It has to be thrown through rather than carried through, and a Keeper has to defend the hoops from the front. The ball took its scarlet colour in 1711, after a match in heavy rain left it indistinguishable from the mud, and the witch Daisy Pennifold then enchanted it to fall slowly so that Chasers could retrieve it in the air.
