The term for wizarding families claiming no Muggle, Squib or Muggle-born ancestry at all, a claim that rarely survives contact with the records, since almost every family tree has non-magical branches.
Pure-blood is the term for wizarding families who claim no Muggles, Squibs or Muggle-borns anywhere in their family tree. In practice most people apply it more loosely, counting someone a pure-blood if neither their parents nor their grandparents were Muggle, Squib or Muggle-born, and the stricter claim rarely survives contact with the records: trace almost any wizarding family back far enough and non-magical ancestors turn up. By the 1990s the number of such families is falling and those left are mostly related to one another, since some have married only into each other for generations. Those who treat Muggle-borns as equals are called blood traitors by the rest.
