Platform Nine and Three-Quarters is a hidden platform at King's Cross Station in London. It lies behind the barrier dividing Muggle Platforms Nine and Ten, and the way through is to walk straight at solid brick. Every 1 September, Hogwarts students board the Hogwarts Express here. The arrangement dates from the mid-nineteenth century. The Ministry of Magic took over the Hogwarts Express under Minister Ottaline Gambol in 1830 and built a station at Hogsmeade, but drew the line at a wizarding station in open London. Under Minister Orpington, in office from 1849 to 1855, a concealed platform was added to the newly built King's Cross instead. It works well enough, with lapses: suitcases of biting spellbooks and newt spleens spill across the floor, so plain-clothed Ministry staff stand by to adjust any Muggle memory.
