Order of Merlin
An award in three classes given to witches and wizards who have done something considerable for the wizarding world, first handed out by the Wizengamot in the fifteenth century and conferrable after death.
Witches and wizards who have done something considerable for the wizarding world may be given the Order of Merlin, abbreviated O.M. It was created in Merlin's memory and first handed out by the Wizengamot in the fifteenth century, and it answers to the Muggle Order of the British Empire, with First Class standing roughly where a knighthood does; unlike its Muggle counterpart it can be conferred after death. The medal is a handsome gold disc on a coloured ribbon, and the colour marks the class. First Class, on a green ribbon, goes for acts of outstanding bravery or distinction in magic; Second Class, on purple, for achievement or endeavour beyond the ordinary; Third Class for a contribution to the wizarding store of knowledge or entertainment.
