Nicolas Flamel is a French wizard whose name comes up in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Born in the early fourteenth century, he studied at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in the Pyrenees, where he met his wife Perenelle, and he is said to have paid for the academy's chateau and grounds afterwards; a fountain there is named for the couple. In the wizarding world he is regarded as an alchemist of the first rank.
