Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests, almost always shortened to N.E.W.T.s, are the examinations Hogwarts pupils sit at the end of their seventh and final year. Every subject has its own paper, and the grades run from Outstanding, Exceeds Expectations and Acceptable down through Poor, Dreadful and Troll. They matter because employers read them, and some posts ask for top marks in as many as five subjects, though plenty of jobs will take a witch or wizard on O.W.L. results alone. The name doubles as a description of the classes themselves, since the work of the last two years is set well above ordinary wizarding level, and a pupil is only let into a N.E.W.T. class if the O.W.L. grade satisfies the teacher.
