Minerva McGonagall is a witch and one of the professors of Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry.

Minerva McGonagall waits out a whole day on a brick wall by the Dursleys' house in the form of a tabby cat. When Dumbledore greets the cat as Professor McGonagall, a rather severe-looking woman sits there instead, her square glasses matching the markings around the cat's eyes. She wears an emerald cloak, and her black hair is drawn back in a tight bun.

She is cross about the celebrating going on everywhere, with flocks of owls, shooting stars over Kent that she puts down to Dedalus Diggle, and people out in broad daylight who have not even bothered with Muggle clothes. She fears the Muggles will find out about them all. She refuses Dumbledore's lemon drop and flinches when he says Voldemort's name, but she has sat on the wall all day to ask him whether the rumors are true.

Her name also closes the letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, signed as Deputy Headmistress.
