Memory Charm
A charm that erases specific memories from a person's mind, distinct from the spell that creates false ones.
The Memory Charm erases particular memories from a person's mind, and it is a different spell from the one that plants false memories in their place. The Ministry of Magic uses it as a matter of routine to keep the wizarding world hidden, on Muggles who have seen a dragon or come into possession of an enchanted object. Building the Hogwarts Express called for one hundred and sixty seven Memory Charms in a single operation, alongside the largest Concealment Charm ever performed in Britain. Some sights defeat it by sheer numbers: too many Muggles have seen the Loch Ness Monster for the Ministry to charm them all, so the Office of Misinformation works on discrediting the photographs instead.
