The record an event leaves in a mind.

A memory is the record an event leaves in the mind of a person or creature. In the wizarding world memories are handled almost as a substance: they can be drawn out of a mind, kept in phials, and viewed from the outside by someone else, as they are in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. They can also be tampered with, whether by another witch or wizard or by the owner of the mind.
