Mandrake

The Mandrake, or Mandragora, is a magical plant whose root takes a human shape, infant-like while young and filling out as it matures. Hogwarts students meet it in Herbology. Pulling a Mandrake from the soil makes it scream. A mature one's cry is loud enough to break glass and can kill anyone who hears it, while a young one's knocks a listener out for hours, so classes work in earmuffs, and the plants quiet as soon as they are back in earth. They are repotted by hand as they grow, gripped by the leaves and settled into fresh soil. Cut root goes into the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which returns anyone transfigured or cursed to their proper state, and stewed Mandrake is the base of most antidotes. Dugbogs and Flesh-Eating Slugs count them a delicacy, and growers who lose a crop find nothing under the leaves but a mess.
