Little Hangleton graveyard
The graveyard outside Little Hangleton is overgrown and half-sunken, with mausoleums, catacombs and carved angels among the headstones, and the Riddle family's marble grave the grandest in it.
Set in the valley outside the village of Little Hangleton, behind a low stone wall and beside the parish church, this graveyard can be seen from the hillside above along with the village itself. By the 1990s it has run to ivy and moss, with names faded from the stones, several of them tilted or sunk into the ground, and stone steps half-buried in the earth. Alongside ordinary headstones it holds above-ground mausoleums, vaults and catacombs below, stone sarcophagi stacked one on another, and grander monuments marked by obelisks and carved angels. The most opulent grave belongs to the Riddle family, three of whom were found dead in a single night at the big house on the hill; their names are cut into one large marble headstone. That house stands in plain view from the graveyard, and the cottage of its gardener, Frank Bryce, sits just beyond the wall.
