Little Hangleton is a village overlooked by the Riddle House on its hill, a fine old manor gone damp and derelict with boarded windows and wild ivy.
When three Riddles are found dead in their evening clothes, the whole village crowds into the Hanged Man, the local pub, to talk it over, and by morning hardly anyone doubts that their gardener did it. The police in neighbouring Great Hangleton find no proof of murder at all and let him go. The Riddles lie buried in the village churchyard, and Dot, holding forth in the pub, insists he killed them whatever the police say.
