Legilimency is a branch of magic for delving into another mind and making sense of what lies there, cast with the word Legilimens and resisted through Occlumency.
Snape explains it to Harry as drawing feelings and memories out of someone else's head, and he scorns the Muggle phrase mind-reading, since a mind has many layers and is no open book. By his account the Dark Lord is a master of it and nearly always catches a lie. Eye contact often matters, and so do distance and the old protective charms around Hogwarts. Harry, for his part, thinks it sounds exactly like mind-reading.
