Hogwarts acceptance letter
The letter sent to magical children in Britain and Ireland before their first year at Hogwarts: a note of acceptance from the Deputy Head, a list of books and equipment, and a request for a reply by owl.
Every magical child in Great Britain and Ireland is entered in the Book of Admittance by a quill that records the name at the moment the child first shows signs of magic, and on that basis a letter of acceptance goes out shortly before the child's eleventh birthday. It comes from the Deputy Head on the Headmaster's behalf, and consists of a short note of acceptance with a list of books and equipment enclosed. Term begins on 1 September, and the school expects a reply by owl no later than 31 July. A first-year's list runs to three sets of plain black work robes, a plain pointed black hat for day wear, dragon-hide gloves, a black winter cloak with silver fastenings, seven set texts, a wand, a pewter cauldron, glass or crystal phials, a telescope and brass scales. A student may bring an owl, a cat or a toad. First years are not allowed their own broomstick.
