Herbology is the study of plants and fungi, magical and otherwise, and one of the core subjects every Hogwarts student takes from the first year onward in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Classes meet in the greenhouses behind the castle under Professor Sprout, a squat, cheerful witch usually flecked with earth, and the work is practical: students learn how magical plants grow, what they demand of their keepers, and what they yield, from potion ingredients to remedies. The subject rewards patience and a steady hand, since a fair number of magical plants bite, squirm, or object loudly to being repotted, and it feeds directly into Potions, which depends on herbological harvests for much of its raw material.
