The Great Lake is a broad black lake below Hogwarts, whose castle stands on a high cliff above it.
It changes with the seasons around the school: by November it lies grey as cold steel under icy mountains, and in December it freezes solid beneath deep snow. When the exams are over, Harry, Ron and Hermione flop under a tree on its bank while Fred, George and Lee Jordan play with a giant squid's tentacles as it suns itself in the warm shallows.
