Fred Weasley makes his entrance in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on the platform at King's Cross, one of the identical red-haired twins who help Harry Potter with his trunk and then cheerfully confuse everyone about which twin is which. A third-year Gryffindor when Harry starts school, Fred is usually the one leading the charge, first with the joke, first through the door, with his twin George half a step behind. The pair play Beater on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, guarding their teammates from Bludgers with cheerful violence, and devote their remaining energy to jokes, forbidden corridors, and the ongoing project of teasing their prefect brother Percy. Their mother despairs of them on principle.
