The Forbidden Forest is the woodland that borders the Hogwarts grounds, within sight of the castle.
At the Forbidden Forest's edge stands a small wooden house where Hagrid lives, with a pair of galoshes and a crossbow outside the front door. From the flat lawn on the far side, the trees of the forest sway darkly in the distance.
Inside, the trees grow so thickly that someone flying low over the treetops cannot see far through them. There are towering beeches in there, and shadowy clearings. Hagrid says he has spent half his life chasing certain pupils away from the forest.
