Flourish and Blotts is the bookshop of Diagon Alley, standing about halfway down the north side of the street, and Harry Potter buys his school books there in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It was established in 1454, not long after the alley itself, and it supplies most Hogwarts students with their course texts. Shelves run floor to ceiling, so crowded that signs are posted through the shop to help customers find their way, and the front windows hold gold embossed spellbooks the size of paving slabs. The stock has caused the management trouble more than once: The Invisible Book of Invisibility went missing almost as soon as it went on sale, and The Monster Book of Monsters tore itself apart and bit the manager when he tried to take a copy off the shelf. The shop also holds occasional signings and takes advance orders on books in heavy demand.
